What SPF actually tells you
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. The U.S. FDA Center for Drug Evaluation and Research defines SPF as “a measure of how much solar energy (UV radiation) is required to produce sunburn on protected skin (i.e., in the presence of sunscreen) relative to the amount of solar energy required to produce sunburn on unprotected skin.” In plainer language: SPF describes a level of protection against sunburn-producing UV under standardised testing conditions.
Two implications matter here. First, SPF is primarily about protection against sunburn, not tanning. Second, SPF is a protection ratiomeasured in the lab — not a real-world time window. That's the setup for the misconception the next section addresses.
