“How long does it take to tan?” — the short answer
There isn't a universal number of minutes, hours or days that applies to everyone. The skin's pigmentation response to UV involves more than one process on more than one timescale: some darkening effects can appear during or shortly after exposure, and the delayed tanning response from new melanin synthesis typically develops over subsequent days. Peer-reviewed dermatology research describes these as distinct processes rather than one single stopwatch.
How visible each phase is depends on Fitzpatrick skin type, UV conditions and individual biology. And “how long a tan takes to develop” is not the same question as how long a person should spend in a single session today — those are two different clocks.

“How long does it take to tan?” is often mixed up with “how long should I spend in the sun today?” They're not the same. One is a biological question about how visible pigmentation develops after UV exposure; the other is a planning question about a single session.

What actually happens
What happens in your skin after UV exposure?
The skin's pigmentation response to ultraviolet radiation is generally described in peer-reviewed dermatology literature as involving distinct processes on different timescales. Peer-reviewed reviews (Brenner & Hearing, 2008, via PMC; and Miyamura et al., 2019) describe an immediate darkening effect involving pre-existing melanin, followed by a delayed tanning response involving the synthesis of new melanin — the latter developing over subsequent days rather than minutes.
The two matter differently for the “when will a tan appear” question: an immediate darkening effect can be visible during or shortly after exposure and can fade relatively quickly; the delayed response is what gives a longer-lasting visible tan and takes time to develop. Both are biological responses to UV exposure.
The fast response
Immediate pigment response
An immediate pigment darkening effect can appear during or very shortly after UV exposure. In the dermatology literature it's described as an effect on melanin that already exists in the skin — not the synthesis of new pigment. This early darkening can fade and is not the same as the delayed tanning response that develops later.
The practical implication for the “when does a tan appear” question: what looks like an early tan during or right after a session may not persist. It also isn't evidence that the exposure was harmless.

The delayed tanning response — often called melanogenesis in the dermatology literature — comes from the synthesis of new melanin after UV exposure. Peer-reviewed reviews describe this response as developing over subsequent days rather than minutes, with visible colour continuing to change after the session ends.
The exact timing varies with UV dose, Fitzpatrick skin type and individual biology, so “the tan appears in X hours” isn't a defensible universal number. The important practical point: visible colour after a session isn't a real-time meter for UV exposure during it. That's one of the reasons continuing exposure just because a tan hasn't appeared yet isn't a safe strategy.

Does a higher UV Index make you tan faster?
The UV Index is a standardised measure of the intensity of sunburn-producing ultraviolet radiation. A higher UV Index indicates a higher level of UV radiation and a greater potential for skin and eye damage — not a “better” or “safer” tanning score. The World Health Organization treats solar UV as a known skin-cancer risk factor and recommends limiting exposure, not maximising it.

The SPF question
Can sunscreen stop you from tanning?
Not entirely. Sunscreen reduces UV exposure but doesn't necessarily eliminate all UV reaching the skin — so tanning can still occur while sunscreen is on. The U.S. FDA states explicitly that SPF is not directly related to time of solar exposure — it isn't a time multiplier, and it doesn't make tanning risk-free. A common mistake
“My tan hasn't appeared yet, so I'll stay out longer” — why that logic breaks
Because the delayed tanning response develops over subsequent days rather than minutes, the visible tan you see today doesn't reflect only what happened while you were outside right now. Waiting for a visible tan to appear before stopping isn't a defensible way to gauge UV exposure — the visible feedback loop is on a different clock from the exposure itself.
The World Health Organization treats solar UV as a known skin-cancer risk factor and recommends limiting exposure, using sunscreen, and seeking shade — regardless of when a tan becomes visible. Tanning itself is a UV response, not evidence that the exposure was harmless.
