Fitzpatrick skin types: Types I–VI explained

The Fitzpatrick scale groups skin into six phototypes according to how skin tends to respond to UV exposure — especially burning and tanning. It's widely used in dermatology, but it isn't a race or ethnicity classification, and it doesn't fully describe a person's skin colour, individual UV risk or medical risk. What is the Fitzpatrick skin type scale?

The Fitzpatrick scale was developed in dermatology to describe how a person's skin responds to UV — particularly how readily it burns and how readily it tans. It groups that response into six phototypes (Types I–VI). It originated as a way to standardise decisions about phototherapy and other UV-dose-sensitive treatments; today it's widely used beyond that in cosmetics, sun-safety guidance and consumer apps.

Because the scale describes UV response, it's a useful starting point for thinking about session length in a personalized way. It has real limitations though (covered further down), so treat it as one input into a larger picture, not a stand-alone answer.

Historical tables often use absolute wording like “never burns” — modern literature has documented that such wording overstates certainty, particularly for darker skin, so the descriptors below use hedged language.

  • Type I

    Tends to burn very readily under UV exposure; usually shows little or no tanning response.

  • Type II

    Tends to burn readily; limited tanning response.

  • Type III

    May burn under stronger UV; gradually develops a tan.

  • Type IV

    Burns less readily; tans more readily.

  • Type V

    Burns less frequently; tans readily.

  • Type VI

    Has substantial baseline pigmentation and tends to burn less frequently — but UV injury is still possible.

No phototype is immune to UV damage. Descriptors above are general tendencies, not individual predictions — see the limitations section below.

Working out your type

How to estimate your Fitzpatrick type

The most defensible way to estimate a phototype is to think about how unprotected skin actually responds to sustained UV. The Fitzpatrick classification originated around exactly that question — burn/tan response — not around visible skin tone at rest.

  • How readily does unprotected skin tend to burn under strong sun?
  • How readily does it tend to tan afterwards, if at all?
  • What has been your prior response to sustained UV exposure?

Many popular quizzes lean heavily on eye colour, hair colour or ancestry as shortcuts. Those traits correlate loosely with phototype but don't define it, and the scale's limitations (below) mean any single quick estimate is exactly that — an estimate. If you're unsure, err on the shorter side for session length and adjust over time.

Important distinction

Fitzpatrick type isn't the same as skin colour

Two people with visually similar skin tone may not necessarily have the same UV-response history or the same phototype, and two people with different visible skin tones can end up in the same category. That's because the scale is fundamentally about how skin responds to UV, not about a colour reading at rest.

Recent peer-reviewed dermatology literature (Garg & McMichael, “Limitations of Fitzpatrick Skin Type as a Proxy for Skin Color and Race” (Cutis, 2026)) specifically criticises the use of Fitzpatrick type as a proxy for skin colour, race or ethnicity — that misuse is documented and worth avoiding. The scale describes typical burn/tan behaviour; it doesn't stand in for skin colour or for a person's background.

What the scale doesn't do

Limitations of the Fitzpatrick scale

The Fitzpatrick classification is useful for describing typical UV response, but it becomes unreliable when stretched beyond that purpose. A 2024 review of skin-classification approaches in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (Harvey et al., 2024) surveyed the tools in current clinical use and concluded that Fitzpatrick is the most widely used and validated of them — but that it has “numerous limitations including its conflation with race, ethnicity, and skin colour,” and that the field has significant deficiencies in current classification instruments.

  • Classification is partly subjective — different assessors can place the same person differently.
  • It doesn't capture the full variation in skin pigmentation, especially for higher phototypes.
  • It isn't a substitute for skin colour and shouldn't be used as a race/ethnicity proxy.
  • Higher phototypes (IV–VI) contain substantial heterogeneity in real-world UV response.
  • It doesn't determine an individual's overall medical UV risk.
  • It's one input into thinking about UV exposure, not a complete UV-risk model.

Balanced framing: the scale is genuinely useful for what it was designed to do (describing UV response), and unreliable when asked to do more. No skin type is free from UV-related risk — the World Health Organization notes that people with darker skin can also develop skin cancers, even though susceptibility to UV damage differs with pigmentation.

Is Fitzpatrick skin type the same as skin color?

Is Fitzpatrick skin type based on race or ethnicity?

Can darker skin still burn from UV exposure?

Yes. No skin type is immune to UV damage. The World Health Organization treats solar UV as a known skin-cancer risk factor for all skin types.

Can my Fitzpatrick skin type change?

Your underlying phototype — the way your skin fundamentally responds to UV — is generally considered stable. Your appearance can change with tanning or sun exposure over time, but that's a change in current tan, not a change in phototype.
